Faith, Family, & the Full-time Job are the three pillars of your life. And often times the full-time job gets in the way of the life you really want. It doesn’t allow for the freedom or the kind of work that you desire.
In this podcast, you will learn how to manage the conflict between your church calling and the business calling that’s within you.
This is entrepreneurs of Christ, a podcast dedicated to helping members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints escaped the day job, pursue the dream within them, which is to create your own business, of course. And I’m your host, Tyson Bradley. This is kind of where I bring in the air horn you. This is Episode Two, the calling you didn’t know you had just titled it that, because what we’re going to talk about is some magical things. And just to recap, I mean, last episode, we talked all about what it means to be a duty bound dad. You know, the life you currently live, because you’re using your time to fulfill other people’s priorities. The life that is, you know, disconnected from who you truly are, and the life you truly want to create. for yourself is elsewhere. It’s and that is more so the path of the man of honor to one of honor. You know, most most men I speak to are so engrossed in the day to day things, that they rarely have time for stillness. And I read this fascinating article, there’s actually studies done that show that people receive more intuition, what we would call revelation, when they are still in silent. And I’ll share a link to the article. So you guys can check it out. You’ll have to go to entrepreneurs of Christ, you know, Ford slash two, and you’ll, you’ll find it.
Tyson Bradley 01:50
But I only mentioned this stillness, because when you actually take a moment to just pause, and really think about the life you want to create, you know, something needs to change. And once you start giving yourself some wiggle room to explore that this business idea, this changing career, this change in life, has been in your heart for some time. And it’s your, it’s your actual duty or real duty to pursue it. When you start giving yourself that wiggle room, you will inevitably hit a few walls, and a few bumps along the way.
Tyson Bradley 02:43
The first one is the wall of family time. And this is one of the pillars of your life. And we talked about this last episode. And in this episode, I want to address the pillar of your church life, your calling. Because here’s here’s the truth, there is a tension between your calling and church and your desire to move forward in your business. Because in your business, you need to create customers, period. But you also need to fulfill your calling. And in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, we we do things differently, we don’t have paid ministry, you wake up one day, you get a call from the steak executive secretary telling you and your wife to meet with a steak present. And the next thing you know you’re a bishop, over a ward of, you know, 200 people, and you’re spending 20 hours a week leading your ward for five years. This is the kind of stuff that happens in our church. It’s crazy. And it’s also super awesome. Because we learn so much from this aspect of our lives is part of us is what we do. And And let’s not forget all the other things that we are encouraged to do as as member of the church, you know, just a few like ministering assignments and family history work and temple work and attending church every week and reading the scriptures every day and praying every morning and evening as individuals and as families and doing missionary work. And I could probably list more, but you already know this stuff. And here’s the thing I would be lying to you if I said that I did all these things while building my business.
Tyson Bradley 04:33
Because while I was working full time, and building the side business, I was also the steak executive secretary. And as of the recording of this podcast, I am still the executive steak executive secretary is plenty busy in terms of callings. Nice besides setting up appointments nearly every day during lunch and supporting all the organizations necessary for steak meetings. I do steak conference. I’m constantly sending email Else to the entire stake and other people. You know, with all this I, I made trade offs on some of the other church to dues. I didn’t, I don’t ministers often I didn’t do family history work, I didn’t proactively go out and do missionary work I did, I did something else. Instead, I worked on my other calling. And the other calling, it’s my business.
Tyson Bradley 05:30
Even though these other things are part of what God wants me to do. Whenever I have spoken to him in prayer, the direction I receive is to focus on the business. It’s like I read in the Scriptures, and, and this happened to be back then. And it happens to me now. It’s like I read scriptures or I watch conference. And even though the scriptures or speaker might communicate about family history, or missionary work, the message I hear are insights about what my business and things I could do to create more value for other people. If you really start to listen, you’ll hear it too. Because there’s a reason why you have the desire to build a business, it’s not just an idea, it’s a prompting. It’s a reason why they call this still small voice. Because when you get still, and you listen, what you have to do in order to hear such things, you can recognize it, you can have space to actually hear it.
Tyson Bradley 06:04
Now, I want you to imagine laying out your planner in front of God and saying, alright, heavenly father, my body and mind can work this many hours a day, it would be impossible to do all the things that you ask. And I know you don’t require me to do everything every day, all at once. But rather, you require me to not run faster than I have means you require line upon line. And you know, that by small and simple means are great things brought to pass. And if this is the case, and this is what my day entails, what would you like me to do with this time you’ve given me? Where do I place the time for the business which you have put in my heart? I want you to see what happens with this kind of activity. That you actually act as though you have a blank slate of a calendar, and you go to God, you seek personal revelation, and you ask, Where would you have me placed time for this business which I feel prompted to pursue?
Tyson Bradley 08:00
I bet you money, the Lord will ask you to let some good things go in order to make room for the better. And this is why the Prophet has emphasized so much the need for personal revelation. You know, when I when I recognized that my business was just as inspired as my church calling, everything changed. I was able to pursue the business without guilt and do it in a way that honored all my other commitments. Sure, I want to still do many of those things. And there’s plenty of people that will say, it’s times and seasons, like there’s times and seasons for these things. And I’m fine with that. And I’m not saying that you let go of these important aspects of your life, I’m saying that when you actually start to seek personal revelation, you might discover that God actually would rather have you do other things. And that may seem like crazy talk, but I would at least invite you to try it out and see what Heavenly Father wants because it literally is impossible to do all those things every day. Like when you think about okay my work and then family time and and you know if we say oh 30 minutes of Scripture study and you know prayer and go into the temple and holy father doesn’t want all that. So I get the desire, because I’m just like you like my desire is to create an amazing relationship with God with Christ into follow his example.
Tyson Bradley 09:53
But I want to mention something that I learned from a friend named fader wade And we’re actually partnering together on some projects, and you can check out what we’re creating together and trusstic coaching.Com. But he shared something interesting, interesting. With me, he said that we actually don’t want to be like Christ, we don’t want to become like Christ. Or why? Because you’re not him. You know, he said, Why become more like Christ? No Sure, you might want to develop the characteristics of Christ, like honesty and love, patience. But your concept of those character traits are going to be different than what Christ would say, in Christ’s way.
Tyson Bradley 10:06
For example, let’s let’s take the characteristic of honesty, you know, if Christ were to speak about honesty, he would share in an amazing allegory or metaphor and, and give us some questions to think about. Honesty as conveyed by you would be different. You might share about what honesty means through a song, or you might describe honesty differently and live it a little differently. Because it means something different to you, your life experience is different. The key is that, who you should want to be is you. You are just as infinite and eternal as Christ. You were born of the same father in heaven, and the more you bring out you, the more you actually serve God in a way that he wants you to serve. So our goal is not to be like Christ, our goal is to be ourselves. And we can become more ourselves through Christ we can have him has have his help in becoming more us.
Tyson Bradley 10:06
That’s what sounds so much more enriching. To me, that’s, that is what is delicious to me, is recognizing that there is a divinity within myself. And the more that I get in touch with that divinity. The more I show up, as me, the more I show up in this world as the version of me that people actually want to be around. So often we go about this life in such a fake way. He showed to work and people ask, I asked you how you’re doing and you say, Fine, but you’re not fine. Here, you’re struggling, you don’t like your job, you wish that things were different in your family life. You may have addictions, you may have challenges. And big problem is that we just start covering up all those problems with ensuring that we show up as this happy, cheery person. And that’s not who we are when we start to become more of who we are. We start to like ourselves more. Because we’re not trying to be someone else. Now the Prophet Joseph Smith was once asked for the Joseph, you frequently urge that we magnifier callings. What does this mean? He is said to have replied, to magnify a calling is to hold it up in dignity and importance that the light of heaven may shine through one’s performance.
Tyson Bradley 10:06
I love that. Now, I’m going to alter these words a bit and say that to magnify your calling, is to hold yourself up in dignity and importance that the light of heaven may shine through your performance. I think when you show up as you that’s when the light of heaven can shine through you and through what you do it’s just like when Paul taught about each member of the church being part of the body. You know, we need some people to be ears some to be noses, some to be toes, got to put you here and this time for a reason and gave you certain experiences and skills and circumstances and and the more that you honor who you are, the better you will perform in both your calling and in your business.
Tyson Bradley 14:52
People aren’t attracted to fakeness they can smell it from a mile away. All I know Is that I want to be a great father and husband and to create a life for my family that allows them to grow in their God given talents. I want, I want to help my kids and myself to become more of us who we are. I want to support my family in a way that honors those talents, the ideas and visions that God has given me. And when you really start to connect spiritually to these righteous desires that you have, you’ll find that God wants to support you and your efforts to make them a reality. Your business is just as much of a calling as your church calling. You’re actually your I mean, your actual calling is your life. God called you to come down and live your best life, not anyone else’s. You aren’t to become anybody else but yourself.
Tyson Bradley 15:54
And I was just reading this book. I’ll put it in the in the, in the resource in the notes, but it’s by Eckhart Tolle a it’s called a new earth. And he talks about how really, the, the you the, the ever present you or whatnot, you show up only in the present moment, when you’re caught up in the future, when you’re caught up in the past. You are lost, you’re not there. But when you can be right here in this moment. You’re always there, you’re eternal, your soul, your spiritual self, is only ever in this moment. So what do you want? What do you desire? What is within you, that wants to come out? When you think about who you are and what you love, and just the type of person that you are and that you love being? Is that the person that showing up in this moment, every single day? Are you or your group goofy self? Do you do you go to your wife and do a dance? Do you do make random noises? Do you? Do you beatbox then and yodel? I mean, I love to do those things. And that’s who I am. I love it. And I also love a bunch of other things. And when I actually get involved in that stuff, when I make room for it, that’s when I get to shine. That’s when I get to show people what this life’s all about. And they get to experience the best version of me.
Tyson Bradley 17:55
So let’s bring this all back home. Because what this show is really about is that there are three pillars of your life right now, your faith, your family and your full time job. But the reality is, is that the third pillar, your full time job is actually a false pillar. It’s a detractor from the other two things. The business you’ve been called Cray is the actual third pillar. It furthers your faith as an extension of your calling. It enhances everything you’re doing with building your family. The full time job is not on par with this with an with the other two fundamental values in your life, you know, your faith and your family. So what this show is about is helping you get the business in as the third support to your house. The full time job is just a brace right now, it’s not even a true support to this life you want to build. Because life you want to build is one word of the family, the faith and the business. You’ve been called the Cray all support each other and support the life you want to live. And it’s possible, friends. And know this because I’ve lived it. And then the next episodes, I’ll share with you how you can start creating this third pillar of your own business. Right? We will talk to you then.
Tyson Bradley 19:20
